They did seem to use a pretty broad brush in selecting the movies. Casablanca? Gone with the wind? Dr. Strangelove but not the movie it paradies, Failsafe? Although Dr. Strangelove does have one of my favorite movie lines - 'Feed me Mandrake, the redcoats are coming':-D
I would consider Gladiator more of an historical epic, but perhaps the first 10 minutes or so where the Roman Legions duke it out with the Goths(?) was enough to qualify it. The circus maximus scenes were essentially staged war, so that could have been it too.
All I know is I don't particularly agree with their choices or rankings.
