I have a letter from Ned Beach where he mentioned that both U-2513 and U-3008 were commanded by friends of his after they were taken into the U.S. Navy, and that they had a friendly rivalry with his AMBERJACK. He argued that a 1948 GUPPY was the better boat.
The show definitely went for the melodramatic angle. Considering that the area they were diving in was probably a Navy test range (complete with a few tons of unexploded ordnance), it's pretty obvious they already knew what was there and how it got there. Wouldn't have been as much fun to say so, I suppose.
