Well, something had to be cut or else the movie would have lasted as long as the TV series! I must confess that I'd rather (given the time) watch the TV version. You really get to know the characters as well as some of the motivations for later events. There's a tense little scene where the officers are all sitting around in the O-Messe and it seems as if, with the best will in the world, they can't help treading on each other's metaphorical sore toes. It ends with the Captain (seen in a quick peek, through Werner's eyes) seeming to be speaking comfortingly to the LI, who has left the table after hearing that the area where his wife is living has just been heaviy bombed. This tiny vignette gives you some background for the Captain's decision to send the LI back home. Unfortunately, it' missing from the Director's Cut.
The subtitles are better by far than some really awful dubbing that was done earlier!
