The Enemy Below

Hallo All,
At the recommendation of a friend, we rented "The Enemy Below" from Netflix. We've seen about half of it (fell asleep.) I found the representation of the U-Boot and its crew highly unrealistic. To me, the men looked far too clean, too well-shaven, and, most important of all, too OLD! Having them speak heavily-accented English (and lots of the accents sounded very fake--not, of course, including that of Curt Jurgens, who really was German) detracted greatly from the believability of the scenes. Did anyone ever, in fact, address the Commander as "Herr Kapitän"?
I know that there is a fair amount of dissent concerning how Petersen portrayed the scenes belowdecks in "Das Boot," and much more dissent regarding Buchheim's novel; yet to me, they are the experts and whoever did "The Enemy Below" had it wrong. Can those of you with more personal experience shed some light on the subject?
Thank you!
Regards,
Meg Rosenfeld
