Movies and Films
The real story is far more enthralling,
The film is based on the battle, for over an hour, at close quarters, between U405 and US destroyer Borie. After ramming each other in Heavy seas at 2AM on morning of on 1st Nov 1943 North west of the Azores, they became loked together for a time with the Bow of Borie firmly stuck on the U-boat..
Unfortunaltely there were no survivors from U405, although 30 crew members might have been saved but for evasive ACTION, which took Borie into the men, as ity attempted to picvk them up. Ironicaaly Bories was so badly damaged it sank the next Morning, with the loss of 24 seamen and 3 officers.
The bravery of these men should be depicted as events happened. there is talk of a remake.
I have been researching some of the facts direcly from a former crew member of Borie , who saw the whole battle and also German and other sources. My father served on U405
and was lost in the Action that night.
