Hello,everybody!
I haven't got a chance to read the original novel of Das Boot.I only watched the Original Uncut Version a dozen of times. So my understanding of those characters is based on the movie only.
All of the crewmembers left deep impressions on me because each of them has vivid and clear personality. However I don't think I understand IWO enough.
It is obvious that at the beginning he is a hardcore Nazi and is seperated from other crewmembers due to his manners and his belief. But as the movie goes, especially when it is towards the end, he also seems to begin to care less about his appearance as it is implied that he doesn't shave everyday or tide all his buttons anymore. He seems to be disliked by others at first but gragually accepted. He is disliked by others, but whenever someone is hurt he offers his hand(e.g.when Pilgrim and Kriechbaum are injured). He looks quite peaceful when the boat is bombed into the bottom of Gibraltar.I don't think he changes his enthusiasm to Nazi during the patrol, but I begin to like him a bit towards the end of the movie. He is a little complicated to me.And after reading the comments about him in other topics that already existed on the forum, I become even more confused.
Could anybody share your opinion about him here? And could anybody tell me what the IWO is like in the original novel?
Thank you very much!
Best wishes!
