I have often wondered how much of this character is based on fact and how much Buchheim created. I have noticed that the IWO of the U-96 on the patrol Buchheim rode (the 7th) actually WAS born in Mexico City.
In the book, he strikes me as viewing himself as morally superior to everyone on board-- even to Der Alte, who baits him-- until the incident with the liner. He makes a stupid mistake that nearly costs several thousand innocent lives, and his politically correct principles cannot help him one iota. From here to the end of the book, he finally begins to act like a human being.
