Not a bad idea, actually. American submariners certainly had a way with language, and didn't always agree with their overseas compatriots on how to pronounce things. The all-time-winner is probably the U.S.S. GATO (SS-212) and GATO class submarines. Our guys pronounced it GATE-OH. And, of course, there's the word "submariner" itself, which is pronounced differently depending on which part of the English speaking world you happen to live in. "Submarine-er" in U.S. English; "Sub-Mariner" in British (or American comic books, if you happen to be talking about Prince Namor).
