Dear John,
I've got the books:"Zu Tode gesiegt", "Jäger im Weltmeer", and "Die U-Bootfahrer". I can read and speak German fluently. But even without that the books are great picturelike. The text is a matter of taste(for some). Buchheim published the books Zu Tode Gesiegt and Die U-Boot Fahrer long after the War was over and one can see this in his text wich is a strong statement against the BdU and everything he stood for.
On the other hand the book Jäger im Weltmeer is exactly in the style one presumes of a warcorrespondent (Marinekriegsberichter)under Nazi censorship, only I have a new print wich lacks the foreword and picture of Dönitz. Buchheim states in his foreword that these two pages are missing on account for the fact that in the beginning of the war he thought Dönitz to be a kind of hero of the seas, but during the cause of the war he found out that he was nothing more than a mercyless killer, hence, they were left out.
The pictures however in all the books are excellent and stunning and they tell the cold harsh story on there own. No text needed there!.
Kind regards, and hope this helps a bit,
Wiljan Bakers
