Das Boot - British or American sailors?

The wikipedia article on the movie Das Boot mentions that the the crew sank an allied tanker and
"They see the wreckage of the tankers and celebrate, but then everything turns into horror when they see burning British sailors dying in the sea."

I thought they were American sailors....
(I could use this as an excuse to get out Das Boot again and watch but the family will howl in protest....)
