Hello,

I've always assumed that since the men shout in English, they were British. In the book, they don't shout at all, but I think they are supposed to be British, part of a "Geleitzug" (convey) taking supplies to Great Britain.

By the way, Buchheim went out on only two patrols with U96, and they were successive patrols; the first one ended when they went into Vigo for supplies, and the second began when they left Vigo. All in all, they were out for nine weeks (and of course they were not bombed when they came back!) Later, Buchheim was part of a large group which left Brest for La Pallice on U309, the penultimate U-Boat to leave Brest. Probably most of you already know this.
Cheers,
Meg
