I would suspect that the reason no picture of Hitler was displayed in Das Boot, was to avoid an unnecessary controversy. If a photo of AH had been displayed, the producers would have had to introduce anti-Nazi dialog in the film, in order to make the characters acceptable to the general public.

The film kept away from politics, and wisely so.
