Good evening, Barry,
The physical description of Der Alte in LGB book is quite close to Lehmann-Willenbrock's ,whom I have obviously never met, but I have some photographies of him when he was CO of U-96.So, we can reasonably assume that the psychological picture of same character could be close to the one of the real CO.Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that LGB recorded only one war patrol in a U-Boot.
I do agree with your statement that Prochnow is really a very good actor, quite curiously, his other films were less praised, I do not know why.And all my respectful congratulations to your wife, she has good taste...
Enjoy your day.
Jean-Noël.
