Hello Theresa,
maybe you want to check this link:

I am not sure but I believe it was reported that LWB had a heart condition which finally lead to his death.
As to your post on Spencer Tracy as starring LWB in DAS BOOT, btw very well reasoned, I think PETERSEN was very much aware of the fact that this movie was German matter in so far as it was telling or trying to bring across German war actions conducted by branch of the Wehrmacht which seemed to be relatively untainted by Nazism, notwithstanding the terrible Kusch-affair. And he had to keep in mind that the German audience was to be addressed at the first place. A German actor with similar outward appearances/features like Tracy is Helmut Griem:

and I think PETERSEN had interviewed him also about taking the act of LWB, but Griem declined; but I am not sure about this.
Anyway from my point of view Prochnow did a superb job and I don’t think it would have been very well received by the German viewers if a dubbed TRACY or REDFORD or who else would have shouted “tauchen” etc. And keeping in mind the excellent response the movie had f.e. in the USA he took the right choice.
You all have a nice day.
Sincerely Yours
