The impression I have of Buchheim's Das Boot is that he is trying to write a synthesis of the WWII German submariners' experience. Therefore, although the book is set in 1941, there are events and actions that would actually have occurred later, or that happened to boats other than the U-96. He's trying to set the whole story into one war patrol by one boat.
It is fun to play "Name that Dude" with the Bar Royale scene. Some are easy, such as "Parsival" Wohlfarth. I would guess that Trumann might be Teddy Suhren. I can't figure a commander who quite fits Thomsen's description, however.
