Thank you for the information, and clearing up my confusion about Hirsacker's name! I don't have access to Conning Tower, as it turns out. Having seen Das Boot about 50 times (perhaps an exaggeration, but only a slight one ) I think that Otto Sander managed to convey a little of "Thomsen's" somber fate, as well as a general sense of impending doom, in his facial expression just after he waves and calls out his farewell to U96 as it runs out of the harbor. It's a nicely chilling little moment, which perhaps wasn't included in the theatrical version; I don't remember.
