When der Alte says : " This man should never have been sent out again in the state he was in ", he's speaking about Bachmann, and not about Thomsen...
So mistery remains, but, in another scene of the book, just after they have their encounter with Thomsen's boat,der Alte speaks about shortened period of turnaround time between patrols and consequent poor maintenance.
What puzzles me, eventhough the "meeting" between U-96 and U-572 is a historical reality, is that Thomsen has already bagged a sizeable number of kills, when Hirsacker had a "nil" score at that time.
But a novel is a novel, and not supposed to stick to history at 100 %.
