Buchheim was indeed courageous (or OUTrageous, some would say!) to write so pointedly about a living man.
Oh, those subtitle-writers, what will they come up with next? The English dubbing of the original movie was so bad it was hilariously funny. When the guys are supposed to be swapping dirty stories, they told instead anecdotes that were so clean, they might have been written for a fifth-grade religion class. I was very glad that the re-mastered director's cut had a more accurate translation. There can't be a person alive who actually believes that a bunch of young Navy men talk the way those guys did in the dubbed version.
