The Cruel Sea is a work of fiction but based on fact. It was written by Nicolas Monserrat who as an officer in the R.N.V.R. rose to the rank of Lt.Cdr. I believe that he disliked the Germans with a great intensity.
Regarding the film itself - some of the things you have observed in the (1953) film could be put down to 'artistic licence'
