It does seem that the Buchhiem character had broken free of something within himself
to become "one of the guys" for a lack of better words. This would be evidenced most clearly in the scene during the second singing of the Tipperary Song and the scene on the bridge where the correspondent is shouting and laughing into the face of the stormy sea and is asked, "Have you gone crazy or something"?
