My interpretation of that scene is that he was indeed getting carried away with the photography. At some points he asks the hard working crewmen to change position for a better photograph. The rag was thrown as a sign of contempt at the interference with the work.

Well since everyone was drunk and there was vomiting abounding, it is quite likely that he would feel queasy either from the drinking or from the vomit smell.
In any case I did not detect any inferences toward homosexuality. The actor selected to play that part, Herbert Gronemeyer, in the movie, has an effeminate looking face which was put to good use in portraying the war correspondent as young and innocent.

Your statement here sounds like you have a hypothesis and are trying to interpret your observations to support your hypothesis. This is not a good thing to let your analysis be guided by your hypothesis.
I don’t think we have anything to worry about the war correspondent. Now that young crewman who dances with the make up? Him I want to keep an eye on LoL
