I do not have particular knowledge on the evolution of the "Lifeboat" script but I do think that Hitchcock was not particularly interested in realism (use of MacGuffin, etc). It is doubtful that Hitch or John Steinbeck who wrote the script were inspired by the Laconia episode or any other similar incident.
