When tube loaded, they were coated heavily in a greenish-yellow grease.

U297. Among the first of the VIIC/41s. Sunk on her first patrol.

On another note, I've seen pics of many builders opening up these floods and replacing them with louvres. Is there any evidence that this was done to WWII uboats? Considering how they were used, I cannot imagine this being the case.

Does anyone have information on when Uboats started using steel propellers instead of bronze? I'm trying to decide if my early VIIC/41 shipped with steel or bronze screws. Thanks, Os

Wonderful Maciek! Thank you. This helped me to make up my mind whether or not to open the lower vents on my model. I have concluded that, given a full fuel load when she sailed, U297 would not have used all the oil in even a single tank after 12 days snorkelling/submerged. I'll be leaving the vents closed.

Interestingly, the layout of U-995s turm shows it dead center. A post war modification, or VIIC/41 standard? I've no idea.

These are the 8 rectangles on the bottom of the saddle tanks. A couple questions: Did Uboats usually run with these open when submerged? How did they open? Did they slide, hinged at the top or bottom, etc.? Are there any decent pics of these vents open? I've seen one shipyard photo with the vents on tank 2 open, but cannot make out any details; and one of a uboat run aground while e

This link might help. The pic may, or may not be U352, but the watercolor is signed by Rathke himself. It sure doesn't appear to have the atlantic bow. [174.123.69.202]
