Hello Titanius, The Book "Another Place, Another Time" by Werner Hirschmann - page 216.. Basically the modification to the forward upper deck was an attempt to reduce the diving time of U-190 a Type IXC/40 which was about 40 - 45 seconds to complete. I believe the modification only decreased the diving time by a few seconds. For example; The Type VII C which was a much smaller U

Hello Brian, The new design Schnorchel was completed by the Norwegian's after WWII on U-995 (Kaura S 309). The new design Schnorchel has an exhaust pipe extending above the deck near the bridge/tower on the Starboard side. There was an intake bend that extended from the Schnorchel fulcrum and created a blister on the port side of the outer hull casing for the intake line. The origin Schno

Hello Raf, Where are these levers in question located? For example; U-570 had the older type lever switchboard and U-995 had the newer rotary type switchboard, or are you referring to levers located somewhere else in the e-room... Regards, Don_

Hi Ken, I don't see any real reason to encrypt the messages source because the transmissions is within sight and not broadcast. If they wanted encryption, then I would suggest the 4 rotor Enigma. I don't believe the US gave the Russians or the Chinese the US manufactured Bombe by the National Cash Register Company during the latter part of WWII. Regards, Don_

Hi Robert, On the Type VII U-Boat there was no source for steam heating onboard and that is because the water boiler heating source was at the harbor. The hookup was on the port or starboard side of the U-Boat near a small access door in the aft casing. The steam heating installation was fitted in the early wartime U-Boats and abandoned (1941) by the mid-years of the war. Regards, Don_

It is my sad duty to inform you all that I have lost a very dear friend; Maciek Florek (SnakeDoc) has passed away on August 2, 2017. Maciek was an expert on U-Boats and he often shared his knowledge with all of us. A friendship is forever... Kind regards, Don_

Hello Moviedude, The Type VIIC U-Boat had 2 dual e-motors which could be run as generators to recharge the batteries. The e-motors ran the U-Boat while submerged, and a few times while surfaced (i.e., when reversing was removed from the diesel engines). One dual unit configured as parallel armatures / generators which charged the batteries configured in parallel for high amps, and in serial

Maciek is absolutely correct... The rudder control device in the sft torpedo roon is only a mechanical steering device. However, in the control room the rudder steering control device (BBC) is electrical only, and the 2 plane control devices (BBC) are electrical and there is a mechanical wheel. The steering control devices (BBC) in the tower and on the bridge are electrical only. I have pos

Hi John, That looks believable... There have been many documented instances where U-Boats have been rammed by warships or Merchant ships, or attempts were made to do so. I don't know of it happening the other way where the U-boat did the ramming. Regards, Don_

The interior photos of U-995 E-Maschine Control Panel have the rotary type devices and not the switch type. There would have been no reason to change out the new controls for the older type. Those look to be correct considering U-995 was commissioned 16 September 1943. Regards, Don_

Wow... U-210 fate - Sunk 6 Aug, 1942 in the North Atlantic south of Cape Farewell, Greenland, in position 54.24N, 34.37W, by ramming, depth charges and gunfire from the Canadian destroyer HMCS Assiniboine. 6 dead and 37 survivors. The U-boat (type VIIC) was rammed, not the other way around! The sub bow in the photo is DEFINITELY NOT a type VIIC! Give it up, the whole article looks to be a

I wouldn't use a sub to ram a canoe, let alone a trawler... There is just too much that can go wrong with such a tactic. What if the trawler blew up and took out the entire bow section of the sub, or even possibly sank the sub? The captain had better hope she sinks, because he would face hell when he got back to home port for being an idiot! I believe Ken is correct; the sub bow looks

According to this web site 1156 U-boats were built and 761 were lost. During the war, 2779 ships were sunk (14.1 million Tons) by U-boats. The ratio is about 3.65 to 1. However, one has to understand that most of the losses (607) happened from 1943 through 1945, why was this? The US was providing aid to England from the very beginning of the war in 1939, but President Roosevelt made it

I believe the Naval Visor cap construction has a cover which is removable; at least the reproduction cap that I have is so. There is a metal ring that was remove from the U-Boat commanders cap to allow the crushed look. Regards, Don_

Hello Jay, Be very cautious about purchasing medals with a history (providence) unless the medal came from a reputable dealer or a family member of the recipient. There are a huge number of fakes German medals, daggers, and etc., that are being sold as originals. You may want to go to one of the German medal collectors web sites and ask a member to upload photos of your medal to verify it
