I recently read that there was only one 'capital ship' that has directly sunk a submarine. Does anyone have an idea as to what ship this might have been, and what submarine it sank? I have spent some time on google, to no avail. I don't know if it was a U-Boat sunk, but it's worth a shot asking here. Thanks in advance, P

Hi Karen, Is there a chance that you mean the ship SS Normandie, with a 'ie' instead of a 'y'? The SS Normandie was a French built ocean liner, but she never was never fully converted to a troop transport, and capsized in New York Harbor in 1942. This is the only ship I could find with a name similar to Normandy, but the Normandie could only carry just under 2,000. Is there a

It may be a little late to chip in, considering this is affair is just about wrapped up, but none the less... I show that the U-2348 was a type XXIII. If you look at the sonar scan of the suspected sub and compare it to a schematic of a XXIII, you can see that the hull shapes are not the same. They are different enough that there is no way that the scan could be a XXIII, and therefore the U-2348.

Hi Johan Borglin, The name of the ship was the Port Nicholson. It was sunk by the U-87. I posted a link in a thread below, but here it is again: It is a article from a local newspaper detailing the ship and its cargo, and the search to find it. -Paul

Hello Phillip Aigner, U-123's KTB for this patrol doesn't show anything about another u-boat surfacing along with them. If it did happen it would certainly be mentioned. -Paul

Hey drumbeat, If any submarines were sunk of California, they would have been Japanese. Japanese subs did attack a very small number of ships of west coast.

Hi all, Like Prbranch, I am looking for more info on the U-548. U-boat.net and Kenneth Wynns book seem to say that it was sunk south east of Halifax. But one of my sources says that the U-548 was an operational loss from May 19, 1945 (which seems to be a mistake, as the war ended almost two weeks before- and that mistake could mean the rest of this is also false) in the Gulf of Maine, possibly s

Hi all, I was just wondering if the U-Boats had any particular paint schemes. I know US subs experimented with stripes, black, and slate gray. Was there any such experimenting with the U-boats, or where they all gray, like seen on the top of the website. Thanks, Paul

I Just want to throw this question out there. In your opinion which do you think was the superior boat, the VIIC, or the american Balao class boats? Balao is faster, large, more heavily armed, (the Balao had 6 spots for 50. cal and 30. cal machine guns, a 20mm, a 40mm, and a 127mm deck gun, as well as 10 torpedo tubes (6 bow and 4 aft) torpedo tubes). The VIIC had a greater diving depth, more whe

Hey all, like MCE said, escorts where very nimble and hard to hit. But if you managed to hit one, it was as good as sunk, since they where so light. They whould be just blown out of the water. Some attacks where made on escorts (for example in the movie DAS BOOT, it showed the U-96 attacking that destroyer in bad weather. I am lead to belive that they actually did, and where forced under when sp

So basically that means if the ship itself weighs 2,000 tons and it can carry 6,000 tons its GRT would be 8,000 tons? or would it just be 6,000 tons? Thanks, Paul

Hey all, I was wondering if a U-boat where to torpedo and sink an empty ship, would they count the tonnage as though it where full? or if they where to sink a full ship, would the tonnage be given as though it where empty? Thanks, Paul

Hi all, I was just curious, how much fuel would a IXD2 or any IX boat take on if they were to refuel from a typ XIV supply boat? Are these statistics even known? Second, why where IXC boats sent for Operation Monsun, operations to the indian ocean, requiring 2 refuels to get to there destination, when the type IXD2 had twice the range of the IXC, only requiring one hazards refueling at sea? Wou

Now the U-255 was not the supply type XIV U-boat, and giving up its diesel fuel to a gas guzzeling BV 138 must have severly hamppered its patrol length... a little odd that the skipper of the U-255 would do that. This boat have any success with the convoy Co-op BV 138? Do you know of any other meetings like this happened and with what boat? Thanks Paul

I was scanning a book the other day and I stumbled across a picture of a Blohm und Voss 138 along side the stern of a U-Boat in the arctic ocean... A little curious... here is a link to a website containing the pictures. Anyone have the Name of the U-boat? or how often this airplane and ship refueling happened? Thanks, P

Hey, The Child was named 'Jesse Roper Mohorovic' because of the vessel that picked them up, the USS Roper, (known for sinking U-85). After the mother announced that she was naming her son after the Destroyer, the crew of the Roper raised over $200 for the baby that night. Sorry if I am giving you info you have already heard, I did not read all of the replies...
