The heading pretty much says it all. I wanted to know if the hydrophones on WWII German U boats had any sort of visual display or was is all audio through headphones? I would assume there was some sort of display but have no idea. If there was a display I would love to see a picture of one. I tried google with no results.

Hello everyone, I read somewhere where earlier in the war, the Germans made use of a personal breathing apperatus in case the air was fouled. From what I understand it was a canister strapped onto one's chest and a hose went to a mask worn over the face. I have heard or read somwehere, where if the U boat had to stay down an extended time due to it bein stalked or chased, the crew could put

Of course I know that if a U boat were to be caught on the surface by an american or british bomber it could easily be destroyed and even at periscope depth it was a target but what depth could a U boat be considered safe against aerial attack? 50 meters, 100 meters??

Sorry, I did not state that correctly. I have read where U boats had hydrophones. Were they used in the same way as Sonar or US boats or was it even the same thing? In other words did German U boats have Sonar AND Hydrophones or were they essentially the same thing?

I would like to know if the Germans used the term "knot" for speed or did the use "kph" instead. For instance would a German Commander say something like, "Set speed at 10 knots" OR something like Set speed at 18.5 kph?" OR Neither, say something else perhaps.

Hello, Recently I had read somewhere that there was a small base or outpost in Kobe Japan that was manned by German personnel that functioned as a repair and battery replacement facility for German boats from the Monson Gruppe apparently since Penang did not have the proper facilities. Does anyone have any specifics on this such as who was the German commander in charge of the facility or any oth

Did German U boats have intercoms so the control room could talk to different compartments or did they just use a runner?

Hello everyone, I am curious to know how long it would take a U boat to achieve its maximum depth from periscope depth. 3-5 minutes?

Hello everyone, I have just recently read a book titled "The Milk Cows" about the U boat tankers by John F White. I had heard of the resupply boats carrying doctors on board to treat sick or injured crewmen of other U boats. However what I am not so clear on was where was this accomplished? Did the U boats doctor have a small infirmary on board and if so where was it located?

Hi, I know the galley was a very small area aft of the control room but what I wanted to know was if there was a place there for the crew to sit and eat also. Was there a table or bench seating for the crew to be able to sit and eat?

Hello everyone, I am looking for a cross section schematic of a type XIV Milk Cow showing labeled inner compartments. It does not have to be very detailed I just would like to see a layout of where generally the compartments are. Captains cabin, Galley, storage compartments, radio room, trim tanks. Things of that nature. I appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi, Silly question I know but did the same person do both jobs. In other words did he operate the radar while on the surface and sonar when underwater or was it done by two different people on board? Or was it possible that the radar/sonar was integrated into one unit.

Thank you for your assistance. So can i assume for a U boat that needed extensive or very lengthy repairs, the whole crew could be transferred out?

Hi everyone, i have a question. Please forgive me if this seems like a silly question. Lets say a U boat returned to port damaged and upon inspection it was discovered that it was going to take a month or more to repair. Would that crew be transferred to another U boat OR would they stay in port and help with the repairs?

Hello, I wanted to know who was in charge of the sub pens in Bordeaux France in 1943. I am also curious to know how the U boats got their orders. For instance, if there was a U boat in the pens, would Berlin have messaged the Commander of the U Boat pen who would then give the orders to the specificied U boat??

If a U Boat Captain was going to be awarded a medal after a cruise, for example the Knights Cross, would the captain be recalled to Germany for that while the boat was being prepared for the next cruise Or would he be given his medal rigt there at the Sub Pens by the base commander. If he was not given the medal by the base commander, U Boat command possibly? Just curious. Thanks

Hello again, I have a rather strange question about the fuel on a u boat. I get that the main engines ran on diesel but was it a special type of diesel fuel or could it be used to fuel a diesel generator on shore for example.

Hello everyone, Thanks to this excellent website, i have learned a lot about U boats! I have just recently learned that the U490 was equipped with a schnorchel. If I understand correctly it was so thr diesel engines could operate while the boat was submerged. Since the 490 was the last milk cow to be built, I would assume it would also have had the latest radar and other and listening devices
