Hi scot when you say nuclier boats of today have lathes on board you mean US boats??
i am a shipbuilder and worked on construction of the uk hunter killers hms triumph
and other trafalger class SSNs and the swiftsure predecessor and i am not %100 sure but non of the royal navys nuclears have lathes but i will find out hopfully as all the current boats were build in my home town

Hi Scott thats great so they did go to sea with a lathe.
i would have never thought they would have such tools with all the space limits on a small sub.
i dont think any uk subs built in the last 50 years has such things on board.
THe story i heard was that someone had a ww2 uboat lath and was scraping it.
my mate told em to hold on as he wanted it but by the time the message was received a

Hi all i heard a story years ago about a lathe that was from a ww2 german U boat!!
having worked on uk subs from the 1950s i find it hard to believe a large machine tool would be taken to sea.
i always thought it was probably a lathe from a german ship yard that built u boats!? but you never know.
anyone know about this??
