Thanks Maciek Exhaust gas valves and silencers, got it thank you! The blue print photo I attached above is dated 1943, and shows no bow modification and no addition of the snorkel. I know U177 and U178 when out on their first and second patroles with only 10 outer torpedoes, why if there was place for 12 torpedoes, only take 10 and that on a trip to the Indian ocean. Sorry for all the qu

Hi Guys Im a bit confused concerning two aspects concerning the type 1XD2 U-boat. Please see the the blueprint I posted below via the photoshack website below. Firstly I noticed there are 12 torpedo containers on the upper deck structure, 6 port and 6 starboard, why is it mentioned that this type of u-boat only carried 10 and not 12 external torpedoes? Secondly I circled another two '

Thanks for the replies! Could anyone then confirm for me if the early type 1XD2 models had the 3 periscope configuration, since U180 had this configuration, being a type 1XD1. Thanj you.

Hi My question concerns periscopes on the type 1XD type uboats. I recently purchased the book Geschichte des deutschen U-Bootbaus, a great book! I noticed plans for the late model 1Xd2 boats (1943/44), and these boats were equiped with 2 periscopes. However I then observed a plan for the type 1xd1, and noticed 3 periscopes, one that was situated forward on the conning tower, and two that desc

Hi, and thanks so much for the answers. Yes I have obtained more info. Firstly the destroyer obtained an R.D.F. contact at a range of 2500 yards, after this at a range of 1600 yards an asdic contact was obtained and then the uboat was sighted on the surface, according to the ships log she appeared to have stopped. Hope this helps Thanks

Hi, reading this account, I believe it could have happened. Firstly, lets say Bauer was on U179, and was dropped off prior to her sinking. I have info of a uboat been spotted off the west coast in september 1942, might be a little early for U179, but we will have to work that out. Dont forget the navigator aboard U179 Paul Temme, was the same navigator that dropped off Robbie Leibrandt in 1941. N

Thanks Phil, lets see what they say. I did have a second glance at that website you sent me. If you look at HMS Active, I noticed near the top of the superstructure in the middle, an 'eye', could this maybe be the front searchlight? Well lets wait to see. Thanks again!

Thank you so much Phil. Just one more thing bugging me, the search light as you pointed out and I noticed is behind the 2nd funnel, if they needed to light an area directly in front of the ship, would the superstructure not block the light. Or in clearer terms lets say she was charging down onto a surfaced u-boat and headed directly on the u-boats bearing, surely the superstructure would block

Hi Hope you can help with this question. On a WW2 British A class destroyer, where would the main front searchlight be positioned? Secondly on this type of vessel, which gun would be referred to as the B gun. Thank you!

Hi Maybe you can help me with this question. The information I have is, A destroyer picked up an asdic contact at 1600 yards and shortly after a u-boat was sighted. The u-boat was stationary, at 800 yards the u-boat was illuminated with a search light. At 500 yards the u-boat dived. My question is, for what reason was the destroyer not picked up earlier? the date is Oct 1942, and I believe
