Google Maps allowed websites like ours to display 25,000 dynamic maps a day for free, but they recently limited the usage to 28,000 maps a month. For us this meant that they wanted to charge us over 1000$ a month for a service they offered for free the last few years, that's why we had to disable some of the maps on short notice. Thanks for the offer to help, but we are already working on

It is very unlikely that U-boats had anything to do with the loss of USCGC ESCANABA - although the convoy escorts had received a U-boat warning none were operating in the Labrador Sea on the day in question according to the available German documents. The explosion that sank the cutter was either an internal explosion caused by an accident (boiler explosion or ammunition handling) or the vesse

Hi Fred The list of 37 survivors from WINKLEIGH doesn't mention a Frederick Smart. Have you tried to obtain his service records? Most of them are held by the National Archives at Kew and they published a guide how to research them here:

Hi Fred, I've located the list of survivors of WINKLEIGH and will add their names to our website in the next major update of our crew lists database. Are you looking for a certain crew member?

Hi Walter Thanks for this information. Wasn't aware that U-122 had indeed reported its sole success when I originally wrote our page about EMPIRE CONVEYOR, because this wasn't mentioned in the BdU KTB. I've updated our website accordingly and also added a photo of the ship.

Hi Martin The source for this information was "British and Commonwealth Merchant Ship Losses to Axis Submarines 1939-1945" written by Alan J. Tennent. I did some additional research on this case and can confirm that the men taken prisoner from LUIMNEACH were not captured by U-46, but ended up in France after being landed there by a French fishing boat. I've updated our page a

Unfortunately it is a long and tenacious work to compare the three passenger lists of ATHENIA (one each for Glasgow, Liverpool and Belfast) with the many different lists of survivors, but I think I have compiled a list with the names of all 1103 passengers who were aboard when the ship was torpedoed. I haven't published it yet as I wish to add some additional details from documents about ATH

Thanks Walter for providing the sources of each entry. I took a closer look on DEFE 3/550 and found the following radio messages in which U-348 is mentioned: Message ZTPG/353515 TOI: 1541/18/3/45 FROM: U 348 through U 1007 LEFT ROENNE AT 1530 VIA GRUEN 10, WAY 1 TO KIEL, SPEED 12 KNOTS. The source for these Duikboot entries about U-348 are probably decrypted Enigma radio messages. Interesting, will check the DEFE files when I have time for it.

This was just a transfer between bases. I corrected this now, it is not longer marked as war patrol.

What is the source for this information? I doubt that U-348 left Hamburg after arriving there on 10 Feb 1945. The U-boat had been damaged after running aground off Hela on 27 Jan 1945 and was probably still in the shipyard for repairs when it was bombed there on 30 Mar 1945. It appears to repair a damaged type VIIC relegated to training duties had no priority.

Hi Mariusz This information is available here on uboat.net - just click on "The U-boats" in the top navigation, then on "U-boat patrols" on the left side and enter the date you wish to know the U-boat disposition. It then lists all U-boats at sea on the date in question and a map with their approximate position if known.

This reference book written by Axel Niestlé is certainly worth to have for everyone interested in U-boat history. However, he only writes in a footnote that he made the reassessment because the wreckage recovered by USS REUBEN JAMES and USS BUCKLEY after the depth charge attacks could be identified as belonging to U-548, but provides no more details.

This data is available on our website. Just click on "The U-boats" in the navigation at the top of the page, then on "U-boat Patrols" on the left side. Here you can enter a date and it shows you a list of all U-boats at sea on the date entered. Scroll to the bottom of this listing and you will find an interactive map that shows the known or plotted positions of all U-boats on

Hi John This story began when U-155 was damaged by an air attack on 19 August 1942 that left it unable to dive due to damage to its batteries. Two days later it met U-510 to get some replacement parts like jump leads, but not enough to get the batteries working again, so U-510 escorted her to the tanker U-460 which handed over more cables that enabled U-155 to return to port safely. BdU had

I concur with the criticism of Admiral King by the naval historian Michael Gannon, while others try to defend the role the Admiral played in this. However, the level of unpreparedness of the US forces against the Operation Paukenschlag is hard to explain. The US Navy was already involved in the Battle of the Atlantic months before the official declaration of war between Germany and the USA and ha

U-161 reported that several escorts irregularly dropped depth charges in the hours after the attack, only one pattern was well placed at 17.58 hours on 16 July 1942 and caused minor damage. This attack had been carried out by the destroyer USS WILKES (DD 441).

23 June 1942: U-172, minor damage 12 July 1942: Non-sub, aircraft attacked a moving oil slick that was investigated the next day by USS PC-458 and USS LANSDOWNE. The latter dropped a pattern of depth charges that brought more oil to the surface and claimed the destruction of a U-boat damaged by air attack. After the war the destroyer was wrongly credited with the sinking of U-153, but it is mo

The effectiveness of the defensively armed merchant ships shouldn't be measured by the numbers of U-boats sunk or damaged by them. While it was certainly important for the morale of the merchant sailors to be able to fight back, nobody expected them to hunt down and destroy the attacker - the armament acted as deterrent and in this role it proved to be quite effective. Only the armed guards

Well, this discrepancy is already in the original re-assessment from 2007 - never noticed that the position listed for wreck No. 3 is a bit different from that listed in the fates at the end of the article. However, the latter is the one that fits the position on the map. Seems the first one was an error that was corrected in the lastest publications by Axel Niestlé and Innes McCarthy.
