Hi, the FuMO-30 antenna was lowered mechanically. In the lowered position it was stowed in the pocket of the conning tower casing. Therefore, before lowering it has to be properly aligned with the casing. You can see the pocket for the antenna on this photo: (it is Hohentwiel antenna, but it was quite similar to the FuMO-61 antenna). The radar antenna was raised and lowered by means

Hi, here are some useful informations: I believe, there were two more (at least) transmitter stations used to communicate with U-Boats: Radio Kootwijk in Netherlands and near Warsaw/Poland (Transatlantycka Centrala Radiotelegraficzna - Babice - Transatlantic radio station in Babice). -- Regards Maciek

Initially, type IIA, IIB and IIC were not fitted with TDC, the torpedo solution was calculated by means of tables and torpedo calculating discs. But in first years of war they were fitted with Siemens TDC, as well as newly construct

Hi, to use radio direction finder, radio-operator had to tune receiver to the frequency of the radio-beacon. Then the loop antenna was rotated to obtain minimum signal. Good description can be found here: (page 58, paragraph: Direction finding and listening equipment) -- Regards Maciek

103. Re: U596
Hi, I have done some research some time ago and I think, that first operational U-Boat equipped with Schnorchel was U264 (December 1943), but first U-Boat which sailed with Schnorchel was U539 (2nd January, 1944). There was accident on U264 during Schnorchel trails, which caused delay, and about one month after U539 she sailed out. The experimental Schnorchel was installed on U57 and

Hi, this is the best I have found: it seems, that type XXI U-Boats were to be equipped with LUT torpedoes and maybe few homing torpedoes for self-defense. -- Regards Maciek

Hallo, I think we should look, how it looked in German: commands: öffnen, schließen, feedback: auf, zu prohibited: geschlossen, dicht, geöffnet I believe, that these words - feedback - were prohibited because, they are similar to commands and could be easily mistaken - L.I. - in the tumult of the crash dive - would not know if vents were opened already or not. -- Regards Maciek

No, there was no need to do that. Because of their primary (or secondary - depending on point of view) function as regulating tanks - they were pressure-resistance. On this plate you can see, which tanks are pressure-resistance (marked with thick, black line - similarly to pressure hull) and which are equipped with flood valves and vents. This plate shows fuel oil compensating system - a

Hi, there has to be a some kind of typo. As you have correctly noticed, the volume of regulating and reserve fuel oil tanks (Regelbunker) was 9,4 m3 both. There is also an error in description - these tanks were not self-compensating - the fuel from these tanks were transfered by means of compressed air. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, "The boat was building with U-860 at the Deschimag Yard, Bremen, during the summer of 1943 and was commissioned on 18 August. During her working up exercises, she was rammed by a tug in the harbor of Libau." -- Regards Maciek

Thanks Axel, there were too many doubts with my first idea with U766 and La Pallice. I wonder, if the emblem on the conning tower was created after one of two aircraft attacks: on 17 April or 1 June 1944. -- Regards Maciek

More informations - from Wiki: "In May 1945 U-766 was transferred to France and brought into French service under captain Brunet. She was in a poor shape, and pieces of U-415 were used to repair her. In the process, she was also fitted with a snorkel. Her trials were accomplished by a mostly German crew composed of war prisoners, with Wilke acting as first officer." ) In the bo

Hi, maybe the boat was moved to Brest? On Wiki there is an information, that U766 was repaired using parts from U415 (which sunk in Brest). I do not know, when U415 was salvaged. ) I also afford possibility, that it is not U766, in the book are few mistakes ""Embleme, Wappen, Mailings deutscher Uboote 1939-1945" -- Regards Maciek

Hi, according to book "Embleme, Wappen, Mailings deutscher Uboote 1939-1945", there was an emblem of U766 looking like following: Below the plane is the date. It seems to be date of the event, when U766, attakced by Canadian Wellington from 407 Long Range Patrol Squadron, shot it down. In fact, this happened on 14 August. On the photo from initial post, there can be visible s

Hi, I agree, and in my opinion records are incorrect. For example, list on the uboat.net does not include U235. Back to mysterious picture - I believe it is U766. After war she became French sub Laubie. When you query Internet for this word, you can find, that there are informations (on French sites), that on 8th August 1944 U766 left Brest (with 14 technicians and spare parts for schnorche
