Thank you for your reply to my query . Rohwer's was book published 1997 by Greenhill Book, only edition I know of. Sources differ as when C was torpedoed. Starke Registers have Sept 43 but Reinhart Schmelzkopf, in Strandgut 22 and Fremde Schiffe in Deutscher Hand 1939-1945. have 7 Nov 1943 by Polish S/M SOKOL, but this must be incorrect as SOKOL was not patrolling in that area.

Is this a photograph of a vessel sinking? Although the photo gives the impression I think the wave between the "sinking" vessel and the boat the photographer is in and possibly the angle the photo was taken, just gives that impression. Another point is that the "sinking " vessel, appears to have her lifeboats secured which would not be the case in a sinking vessel or in a pass

I did know many of the German vessels that were sunk from my research into merchant vessels, including those taken over by their countries navy's as auxiliaries, that were sunk during the two world wars. Your answer has pointed me into a direction to look to find out more info on these actions, Regards. Michael S. Conway,

I have been in touch with the publishers of Cochrane Shipbuilders. It would appear that, Gilbert Mayes, one of the authors of the book, heard about the research Ken Bagnall had done in the sinking of the Bromelia. It is the same information as Walter supplied with the link he gave. One comment that was made is that a U-boats KTBs may have only been written up after the patrol, if so the sinking o

Thank you Walter. A most interesting article. I don't understand why the u-boat wouldn't report the attack as Bromelia was a surely a legitimate target. Regards Michael

Thanks for the answers I have received to date. Lloyd's Casualties Returns has Bromelia, as missing with the position and date she was last seen. I also have Wrecksite as a source and Lloyd,s War Losses. Another source is a trawler web site "The Bosun's Watch" but they may be only quoting from the sources already mentioned. I would suspect that it is true that the sinking was

Thank you Michael. Although Q 29 may have been rigged as a schooner, she started life as the brig "James J. Bibby". Built by the Garston Graving Dock and Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Garston, as a sailing training ship for the TS "Indefatigable" berthed on the River Mersey. Garston was the part of Liverpool where I lived until I got married in 1970. Regards, Michael S. Conway

On 22nd July 1918, the "Q" ship Q. 29, sailing under the name of "Dargle", was in action with a German submarine. The action took place 55.12 N 01.21 W, in the region of the mouth of the Tyne. The S/M fired three shots at "Dargle" but none hit. "Dargle returned fire and struck the conning tower with their third shot. The S/M had commenced submerging once "
