Further research shows that in addition to Capt George receiving the DSC the two Gunners on the Marie Suzanne received the DSM. It is also likely but not yet confirmed the Capt George was Master when she was sunk in 1918.
More examination of the location of Uboats operating in the area of the 19th Nov1917 attack suggest other possible candidates are U39, U67, U77, U79, U95, U97, U151,UB31, UB40.

Further to the previous posts I have obtained a 2 page copy of the log of the Marie Suzanne for the relevant period.
Page 1 only give the departure port and date together with the arrival port and date between the 5th Nov 1917 and the 18th Jan 1918.
The relevant voyage is between Milford and Gibraltar departing Milford at 3pm on the 17th Nov 1917 and arriving in Gibraltar on the 27th Nov 1917.

Thank you, the 19th for the attack on the Marie Suzanne is consistent with the 19th November given in Micheal Lowery’s post from British vessels lost at sea so the picture is building.

I am researching the Capt P E George of the Merchant Marine who was awarded the DSC in Feb 1918. A newspaper article from 1942 suggests this may have been for resisting and possibly severely damaging an attacking U-boat while Captain of the Marie Susanne. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any record of this even which must have taken place in 1917 as the only reference to the Marie Suzanne

Michael,
You mentioned Spindler’s official history, does that add anything to the Forstmann’s log?

hello Simon, thank you and yes it is a mystery, the time of the encounter matches the Royal Navy report but I’ve not come across the number Y4 and the Lottie Leaske was only about 94 t not the 250 t in the log.

Hello Simon, Thank you for this.
It has however raised a few questions as it appears to refer to an armed "Italian" watchboat whereas I was under the impression it was a British Drifter of the Auxillary Patrol, the Lottie Leaske, that was sunk on the 18th Dec 1915.
Do you think it is possible he would not have known it was British? the Gun size is consistent with one used on drift

I contacted the BAMA Freiburg as suggested by Micheal Lowery but they said they were an organisation for scholars and didn’t provide any information for purchase.
The NARA is more hopeful but they are currently working remotely so cannot access the microfilm at the moment and suggested keeping an eye on their website for updates .
