Thank you. I have not been to UK in 10 years now, but it's on my list. HMT Manitou as been of interest to me since I read about the account of Turkish torpedo boat Demir Hissar firing three torpedos at the sink ship in April 1915, The ship was stationary at the time of the close range attack, but all three torpedoes missed, two because they ran under the Manitou. Then of course there was run

I am looking forward to any eye witness accounts regarding this vessel. A while back I was searching the Great War forum and several other places. I’m also trying to track down more of history of the HMS Partridge II.

That would be great! I have searched through a number of the WW1 forums for information about the HMT Manitou. There are a number of accounts of the ship being stopped and attacked by the Turkish torpedo boat Demir Hissar, even photos of the aftermath following the encounter, but looking for information about other torpedo attacks later. The air attack is something I had not heard referenced befo

I found information on British Felixstowe F.3 seaplanes operating out of Malta, the first of being delivered to the base at Kalafrana on 24 April 1918. The Times of Malta states that no aircraft were sent from the UK. Instead all the F.3s were built on Malta in HM Dockyard.

Did Italian, French, or British aircraft patrol the waters between Malta, Sicily, and Northern Tunisia in 1918?

I’m trying to identify the U-boat in Library and Archives Canada Photo, MIKAN No. 3526112, which Showa a type VII boat with a crest on the front of the conning tower with the number “73.” The photo caption identifies the men on the deck as belonging to a boarding party from the HMCS Matane (K 444) and location is given as Loch Eriboll, Scotland, May 1945. Can someone ID the U-boat based on th

Was there a common reason why no commissioned type UC III boats went on a war patrol in the late summer/early fall 1918? Crews not trained? The final closing of the the Dover Straits?

I'm interested in the U-boat transport missions in WW2. I have a few references, but are there any books anyone can recommend? I'm interesting in the efforts to resupply the besieged French bases as well as the missions to and from Japanese occupied territories. Regards, Chris.

Thank you for the reply and the official record reference. It's an interesting action. KptLt.Robert Moraht and his crew found themselves in the middle of a hornets nest after miscalculating their position in the convoy, Regards, Chris Ballance

I noticed that U-boat.net no longer references the HMS Partridge II involvement in the sinking of U-64 on 17 June 1918. I have seen several accounts of the Partridge II and HMS Lychnis both attacking the submarine after its failed attack on the HMT Manitou and torpedoing of the former German merchant Kandy. Have new documents come to light that justify giving all the credit to the Lychnis? I

Thanks for posting the link to the video of diving on the U-13. Finding an enigma rotor in that visibility would have been more than a bit of good fortune.

Thanks for the information on diving operations on the U-33 and U-13. It's funny but I could not find references to modern divers visiting these wrecks. Is right to assume that rotor VIII was not issued before January 1940. I have been trying to find out when the M3 Enigma started to be used at sea, and the sources I have found so far just say early 1940.

I asked about U-13, but a salvage operation off Southeast England would have been difficult as Luftwaffe operations against the Channel convoys were at full force. Was the wreck of the U-33 inspected at the time? Could another body of the crew with rotor VIII have washed up? I’m assuming there were a limited number of German small vessels with M3 Enigma machines in early 1940, so was focusing on

Enigma rotor VIII became available to the codebreakers at Bletchley Park in August 1940. Is there any chance this rotor was recovered from the wreck of U-13? Are there any other U-boats or surface vessels lost in the time period that would be a better candidate for the source of rotor VIII?

I have searched all the posts on the British Operation Operation Creek/Longshanks, and I was wondering if anyone has tried to track down all the ships lost with Indian port origins during 1942-44 to see if there was a "signal" in the data that would support the hypothesis that German coded intelligence signals played a part in the loss? I don't doubt that Germans in Goa received an

I have found the following single online source stating that after the U-49 was forced to the surface by depth charges and scuttled during the Norwegian campaign on 15 April 1940 that the Allies were able to recover documents with the dispositions, codes and operational orders of all U-boats in the Norwegian operational area. Do any of sources support this claim? [20thcenturybattles.com]

Can anyone help identify the U-boat that fired a torpedo at the HMT Manitou on Sunday, 8 July 1917? I don't have any other information other than the attack was in the Mediterranean. I have been trying to pull together the history of the HMT Manitou in WW1, and the ship seems to have been very fortunate to have survived at least three other attacks.
