Castell I've never heard such information about the name of a merchant vessel. I suppose that the important information is more the destination and cargo of a ship than her name. Rgds Yves

Felix In a German document "Noch lebende U-Boot Kommandanten des Weltkrieges" dated summer 1938, Spiess is not appearing in the list. So, seemingly, he died before this date but I have no more details. Rgds Yves

Denis Not necessarily, there are many reasons why a ship would go for repairs at any time of her life and not only hits in a submarine attack. Regards Yves

Moin Michael Basiscally you are right Spiess was in charge of U 19 all year long especially during war patrols. In the meantime for some periods ashore he was replaced by Heinrich Koch (in deputize) probably while Spiess was on leave. Does this replies to your question ? MfG Yves

On Nov.15th a strong gale was blowing in this area with a rather low pressure zone centered on Ireland. Hector might have disappeared in that circumstance. In any case, she is not U-Boat related. Best regards Yves

Good morning Regio What is the source of your information sunk off Capo Bellavista. The only information we had here at uboat.net was only "Mediterranean" With a more accurate location such as you say, it becomes easier to find which U-Boats could have been that day in the area. Rgds Yves

I have not that KTB, my source of information is Dwight Messimer in the book previously quoted, he is a very reliable historian. Per this source, U 22 returned Emden on 21st after discovering he had torpedoed U 7. Rgds

The following day they encountered a surfaced submarine which did not challenge the recognition signal and seemed to try to evade. U22 came in an attacking position and fired 2 torpedos, one of them hitting just forward the conning tower. Many sourc

Hi According to Gröner German Warships vol. 2 In the 1917 rebuild undertaken on UB12 and intended for UB10, 16 and 17,, the torpedo tubes were replaced by four 100mm mine-launching tubes (8 type UC 200 mines) Regards Yves
