Moin Michael Basiscally you are right Spiess was in charge of U 19 all year long especially during war patrols. In the meantime for some periods ashore he was replaced by Heinrich Koch (in deputize) probably while Spiess was on leave. Does this replies to your question ? MfG Yves

On Nov.15th a strong gale was blowing in this area with a rather low pressure zone centered on Ireland. Hector might have disappeared in that circumstance. In any case, she is not U-Boat related. Best regards Yves

I have not that KTB, my source of information is Dwight Messimer in the book previously quoted, he is a very reliable historian. Per this source, U 22 returned Emden on 21st after discovering he had torpedoed U 7. Rgds

Denis Undoubtedly U7 was mistakenly sunk by U22. On 20 jan. U22 departed Emden en route for Zeebrugge on her way to tranfer to the Flandern Flott. The following day they encountered a surfaced submarine which did not challenge the recognition signal and seemed to try to evade.
