Read once of a convoy of tankers which was severely mauled. The ships were bound for Operation Torch and the resulting fuel loss stymied the Allies for a few months or so the author claimed. Anyone else heard of this? Also read that the 6 million or so tons sunk in 1942 delayed any possible landing in Europe by a year. Anyone else read of this and confirm by solid sources?

I was reading Richard Hartmann in U-49 returned from a patrol in May 1917 with the first report of a depth charging. Is this correct? If so, Do we know which vessel delivered the depth charging that he later reported on? Apparently previous depth charge targets did not survive. I read DCs used in March 1916 against U-68 vs. Farnborough. Also read UC-19 in Dec. 1916 was the first confirmed DC o

Served in the Med. Said he could always tell because something was off with them. Does anyone recall his name? I read it and now cannot find the source. I should have jotted it down at the time.

Pardon if this is a known item. What time zone is used in KTBs? Trying to match up sightings and note the difference between waters around Ireland and Germany instituted Daylight Savings time in April 1916, did this also effect the time used KTBs? Thanks in advance as always

In his book Submarine Warfare he makes reference to 146 orders issued to submarines in the course of the war. For example order, Order No. 24 of June 5, 1915 prohibits the sinking of passenger ships. Is there a list of these orders in their entirety? Also, regarding the sinking of the Justicia he gives credit to U54 commanded by von Ruckteschell and provides considerable detail regarding t

I read Stoker's Submarine a few years ago and apparently his health was affected during imprisonment. There is the comment by a surviving family member who recalled Stoker would shout "North!North!" in his sleep. The loss of his ship obviously a traumatic event. Perhas other members can provide additional details on his career.

Consists of individual photographs, newspaper clippings, command assignments and OOBs. That latter two similar to what we have here on uboat.net except compiled during wartime.

I think there are two different episodes as nothing in his memoirs mentions Machranhanish. I have to admit I would love to hear the story as well.

I should add available in French, Spanish, Italian and Russian. I have copies of the first three. Later republished in German at a later printing as Wir jagten Panzerkreuzer. I just noticed a number of inexpensive copies on bookfinder. Translation long finished it is the "extras" that are time consuming. Wish to do it right the first time.

That is Johannes Spiess. I would look at bookfinder.com for copies as there are a few there. I have completed a translation and am editing it with information from the German Offical History, relevant submarine KTB and Allied sources prior to submitting to a publishing house.

Incorporating the KTB within a memoir in current project and find part of the KTB is handwritten in cursive which I cannot presently decipher. (I suppose somebody pinched their typewriter) Anyone come across a similar issue have advice on how to do it or a firm or individual expert who can decipher? Not lazy, I actually learned how to decipher Fraktur but stumped here.

Thanks. I was thinking of two others but did not wish to "lead the witness" by their inclusion in the OP. I found that similar to WW2, blank or timid patrols would result in critiques which may lead to relieving the commanding officer. Wonder if commanding officer evaluations by flotilla commanders are available for review?

Gibson and Prendergast mention how the crew of a boat which underwent a severe depth charge attack were given special leave to settle their nerves. Have read of how some hastily trained crewmen later in the ware were paralyzed by fear. Any commanders relieved, temporarily or permanently, due to the effects of stress?
