61. Re: U21
Thanks Michael, YVes responded privately and also showed me the reference document for T1022 which I found on the Hathi trust site(hope I spelled that correctly) I found the KTBS are on roll 4 PG 61537 and roll 5 PG 61538,61539. Intended on ordering those specific PG nos. Am I correct? Will I be missing information? I did not want to invest in $125/roll if I was only using a few frames from

Thanks. I was wondering before asking the PRO folks to provide me with an estimate in copying costs. Travel to the UK is very expensive right now.

I should add that I read early war boats used the merchant ships own boats after stopping and signaling for ship's papers to be brought over. The merchant crew would be left on the U-boat while an inspection party party rowed over to the ship to confirm its status. But again wish to confirm from those who have read more.

For us in boarding merchant ships and examining papers or laying charges. Were such small rowing craft always present pre-1914? Canvas collapsible types? I presume the could not be stowed on deck if they were the rigid hull ones.

I read the Allied Powers offered a reward for the capture or death of Otto Hersing after his Dardnelles victories. Is this correct?

I believe Ben Bryant has the highest count at 35 or 36 vessels. David Wanklyn has the highest tonnage due sinking two ocean liners turned troopships, plus other vessels, at 94000tons

I think American submarines used this in the Pacific against late war convoys. Then there was the case of the Harder and the multiple Down the Throat torpedo attack at IJN DDs rushing towards a purposely exposed periscope.

Thank you Ives. That is much more information than I was aware of prior to posting. I am annotating his book and would like to be able to fit in a final chapter on his final disposition. Thank you again very much. The assistance is greatly appreciated.

U-156torpedoed USN Blakeley in May 1942. U-156 later attempted to bombard Aruba oil facilites. A crew member was injured and was landed at Martinque in February 1942 for medical care. State Dept. advised it would not tolerate the harbouring of a raider in American waters. Ironically, Blakeley made emergency repairs at Martinque after being torpedoed.

U.S. Gov't nearly seized Martinque after a Uboat visited the island to disembark a wounded crew member.

Uboats sank 5 Brazilian ships within the span of a few days is considered the reason Brazil declared war on the Axis. Resulted in numerous patrol bomber bases positioned on Brazilian possessions.

My compliments to you for attempting to read in German. The title is available in an English translation Unfortunately, it is very expensive in English. Perhaps a dictonary with nautical terms in German-Dutch might be helpful. I have seen them in German-Spanish-French-German.

Viewing this and then read Teddy Suhren's autobiography yesterday regarding the poorly trained c.os/crews that were rushed through training had me thinking if the Uboats lost in May 1943 had primarily inexperienced commanders.

Admiral's Wolfpack by Jean Noli mentions it. Axishistory forum has a bit on the poor luck Zahn had throughout his career. In the kriegsmarine or bio secion. I forget where. But he certainly had a bit of bad luck. However, he did survive the war.
