Wonder no more Sam, no uboat entered the St. Lawrence River during WWI. Uboats did sink ships off the northeastern coast of the USA and Canada. Among them was the U53 sinking 5 ships in 1916. U117, U140, 151 and U156 also sank ships. There is a lot more info in the WWI section and WWI Forum section of this site. Respectfully, Joe R

Hi Again Pete, I am really interested in why you would believe the dispatches and the personal account of an officer on a CL. These reports were extremely inaccurate. Let me repeat, NO UBOAT WAS LOST AT JUTLAND. See periscope, shoot at periscope. No more periscope. AHA U Boat sunk! All part of the fog of war. Chronological list of u boats lost in WW1 Respectfully, Joe R

Merry Christmas Pete and welcome to the WW1 Forum, No uboat was sunk during the Battle of Jutland despite quite a number being at sea on May 31 and June 1 1916. Air ships were also deployed by the HSF. A complete order of battle can be found here Hope this sheds some light on the subject. Respectfully, Joe R

Hi DasFitch, Leutnant z.S.d.R. Herbert Sauer was born on 8 June 1889. He served in UC16 prior to it being sunk and also in UC55 when it sank on 29 September 1917 making him a PoW. He was never in command of a uboat. He died on 11 May 1944 while serving in the KM with the rank of KorvettenKapitan z.V.(zur Verfugung).
