Received the documents and they compose the recollections of W.E. May who served on HMS Lychnis. Contents are identical to his reminisces published in The Naval Review "Mediterranean Convoys, 1918" (personal recollections), 1965-3.

There was a convoy action on that date involving gunfire directed at a surfaced German submarine. The submarine did not return fire. It was a scenario where all ships present opened fire on the submarine. I wonder if the gentleman passed from friendly fire or heart attack. The folks at greatwarforum.org may have his service record already and if no, provide leads on where to obtain. This item wou

Hello Chris and David Have a question regarding Manitou if information dating for June 1918 is available. Did Manitou's voyages in convoy originate outside of the Med? Or was the vessel used inside the Med. only at this time? Well you see what I refer to. Regards FC

According to this site: torpedo attack occurred at 215pm. No escort present. Ship abandoned and it was an hour before another vessel came into sight. Wayfarer eventually towed into port and repaired. Do we know why U32 did not commence a second attack?

Hello Michael, I saw the medal site and presume the text, which reads journalistic, is from the newspaper article in the document collection. Presume the September attack which sank one ship in convoy is the action mentioned. Perhaps overclaiming following an attack? Regards FC

Hello Everyone, Have read different versions so asking if Schwieger launched an old bronze head torpedo in the attack on Lusitania or a newer G6 or other? Also is it known when the supply of new production torpedoes caught up with demand and the bronze head were no longer used on active service by submarines? Thanks in advance, FC

Hello Michael, The vessel information provided above enabled a more specific search of newspaper archives which resulted in a name Huss and then sorting through POW/Internee cards found Thomas C. Huss, 3rd Welch Regiment taken off the Princess Ingeborg. Thanks and Regards FC

and took prisoner a British officer on-board. Recorded in some local German, Danish, etc. newspapers as occurring. Pardon the bother. Do we know who that gentleman is? None of the internee cards examined yielded a result. (in case it was a ret. officer or merchant navy officer) And reviewing the semi-official "All UK, British Officer Prisoners of War, 1914-1918" did not yield a r

Looking at finding individual submarine war diaries, submarine flotilla diaries, etc for Italian units. Is there a finding guide similar to the ones published for German naval records?

To add to this thread about the vessel identity. Appears the Waterford Sinking Disaster Commemoration Committee and Richard McElwee, who wrote The Last Voyages of the Waterford Steamers, identify the vessel described by Hashagen as the Coningberg not the Formby. I think an issue with that identification is Hashagen mentions a page later sinking another vessel within a short span, 24-36hrs. I

Would a surfaced submarine raise the search periscope to its maximum height and use it for search as well? Have not read that in Ger. memoirs. Well I think some USN subs did in WW2.

There is a photo circulating around the Internet showing Carpathia sinking. Shows peacetime colors and no stern gun. If anyone has the loss report, was Carpathia repainted in wartime all grey and armed with a 4.7" on the stern? Here is a link to the pic: Under the headline The photos taken from the surfaced submarine which sank the ship show a dark vessel and are indistinct. O
