Hi Walter: I first read a story in the defunct Saturday Evening Post from 1955. Seven year ago the subject was covered in "General Discussions" I asked if anyone knew how many tanks were on Fairport. I can look at my posts from then but perhaps due to my ineptness I cannot look at the responses. I recall one poster said that a C-2 class cargo ship could not have more than 40 tanks i

This story of the Fairport is interesting. The other four or five ships of this convoy had been fully loaded and on the day or two before sailing all the tanks arrived. They all had to be loaded on the Fairport which was the only ship with cargo space. From the readings I saw, the cargo was complete tanks, not just engines. The only dispute is how many tanks were actually on board-one source

About a year ago I sent two photos of Kurrer of U-189 and a copy of his memorial service conducted by the Lutheran church on behalf of his widow and two young children in late 1943. I sent them to the gummi email address. There is no reply to it or a second request four months ago. The photos never appeared on the Kurrer site. Is the gummi e mail address correspondence not monitored? I have

4. U-864
Has anyone here heard any current information on the raising of the U-boat 864 off of Norway. The mercury has to be deteriorating still and the project to raise it was submitted for further study in 2010. I cannot find any information newer than six years on the subject.

There is a U tube film "Inauguration of an U-boat commander" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=y535pNcHpVA) currently on u-tube that shows Von Stockhausen returning in late January 1941 to his home town to be honored. You see him great the party leader in town along with his mother, wife, twin daughters and year old son. Also his brother is shown saluting him on his arrival by train. Was is

I thought that Donitz and Kapitan Godt were the only people who lived in the building although some staff would have to be there 24 hour a day and alternate shifts. The Axis powers took over half the hotels in Paris so there probably was plenty of places for U-boat staff to live. By May 43 the HQ had moved to Hotel Steinplatz in Berlin. That is interesting place also as it looks much like it d

The confusion is that the building fronts on two streets, it is No 9 on Blvd M and No 18 on Blvd Suchet. It is a big building (See Paris street map) Donitz had his living quarters on the second floor others were for U-boat operations. I think it was used for all U-boat operations a few months after Sept 1942. If you live in the EU just hop a train to Paris to see it. Will take a short time

I show address as No. 18 opposite the Bois de Boulogre. The building as of 2008 was part or an annex of the Russian embassy. The only difference I noticed when I saw it was there is a pent house on the roof now and the trees have grown up to conceal a lot of it. Otherwise it is unchanged. This is the high rent district of Paris-unlikely to be torn down soon.

I am confused. I show Willy Meyer was in the Class 45. Was he a repeater from Class 44? Also, Collmann was the instructor according to my list. You might recheck. Perhaps this is not Class 44 afterall.

Has the U-864 finally been raised? There has been no info I can find since 2010. At that time the Mammoet Ltd. got the contract and was to begin the lift. If there is a serious mercury leak , it needs to be dealt with soon while the canisters still have some integrity. I respectfully recognize it is a war grave, but unless the two parts of the sub are still solid and protected from sea w

There is an error in photo identification on the name "Rolf Riesen" of the U-180. The top photo shown is of a bearded Werner Musenberg, the first commander taken on July 3, 1943 in Bordeaux on return from a very very strenuous voyage. Could one of the staff of uboat.net get this photo removed? Riesen did not last long enough on patrol to grow a beard- unfortunately.

At a time when President Obama is awarding Medals of Honor 150 years after the incident, it is time for the German government to recognize with belated Knights Crosses the deeds of some of its U-boat commanders. No one is more deserving of the KC than Detlev Krankenhagen who in May 1944 with almost certain death facing him sank an American aircraft carrier and damaged a destroyer. His deeds

I have a photo of Torpedo Class 46 of May 1943. All officers signed the back of the photo but one signature was soaked with tea or water and dissolved. Can anyone identify the officer second from left in the front row. The others are: backrow Hilmar Schreyer, Werner Kruer, Helmut Wicke, Werner Remus, Harald Muhs, Otto Luther, Klaus Anderson, Heinz Sieder, Werner Wendt. Front row: Karl K

The foto of Czygan of U-118 has good foto of Herbert Brammer commander U-1060. He is in center of the 3 officers. The officer on extreme left is Hans Falke commander of U-992 later. This is commission foto 1941/Dec. I let Gummi know one year ago but no reply. Brammer foto is needed for Commander site.

Hi John- I also have the book of James Rusbridger. I have no new informations on the last voyge of the Surcouf. I only say that Rusbridger makes huge assumptions on the location of Surcouf on 14 Februar considering that she was not seen, and did not contact Allies by radio, for whatever reason in that period and her speed was not known for certain. I red the article in "Sea Classics&q

Thank you, John. Your source is probably correct about U-502. There would not be so much dispute over Surcouf if one could be sure of its route and speed.

I find the magazine, -Sea Classics-1992/Sept. The sinking date 14 Feb 1942 in German Grid EC 9436 12 degrees 9 minutes north by 70 degrees 21 minutes west or about 32 miles southwest of Aruba. Von Rosensteil write sited tanker of about 2600 tons showing dim navigation lights. Hit amidships. and vessel exploded and sank immediately. Slurfaced and went through a pool of burning oil. There was an English language article a few years ago making a very good case that the Surcouf was sunk by U-502 Von Rosensteil with his last torpedo on the patrol 3. Von Rosensteil said he saw a small low oil tanker like ship. He did not get credit for the tanker but the dates and the general location make for a very good possible. As I think on this the author said the location was 100km fro

I believe the top foto in Rolf Riesen biography site is not Riesen but of KK Musenberg at Bordeaux in France. Foto made on 3 Juli 1943. I am not sure who is to take care of Fotographs on site but Riesen had no time to grow beard, lost in a few days on his sole patrol.

Ken Dunn's post is good. There is a group photo of Czygan officers under Commander Listing for Czygan U-118. The center officer is Herbert Brammer of U-1060. Exec officer. Gunemar needs this photo and I told him in e mail but not to reply yet

I read that salvage work was to start in Feb or March on cargo of precious metal. I cannot find any updates in Austria or -Internet- on progress of work. Has any precious metal been raised yet? All seems very quiet. Johann
