Hi Rainer, Sure, handwriting is often a real problem ... the details on my own father's service record are very difficult to decypher ... but I've now seen a scan of the logbook entry, and George's Grandfather had very clear handwriting ... there is no mistaking the serial number AM638 and 'M' for the date, 27th December 1942. Hi everybody ... I'm a newbie here! My research into F/Lt Desmond Victor Varian, a 500 Squadron RAF Hudson pilot, whose aircraft disappeared over the Med on the same day (12th December 1942) as another Hudson from the same squadron piloted by P/O John Pugh. John Pugh's aircraft was shot down by U-73 (an event that can be read on this site), and the serial number is given as AM689
