hi, to operate a submarine (or any other warship) you need a functioning logistic chain including an industry (factories) producing the necessary spare parts. On the German side, most of this was destroyed in Allied air attacks. The Allied navies using German warships had to acquire spare parts or change the equipment. An example of this is the Norwegian navy operating ex-Kriegsmarine

hi, John, I`m rather sure that the notes referring to UB-39 are correct, see The written text in your link refers, however, to the exploits of U 57 (Ritter von Georg) I recall that I saw the picture shown at the end of the linked text in Fürbringers book "Alarm! Tauchen!!" in the english edition "Fips", see greetings, Urs

hi, I tend to disagree with that "one of the last straws" opinion. Even after the LUSITANIA sinking, Woodrow Wilson won the 1916 presidential election with a "He kept us out of War" campaign. Germany`s (resp. the Kaiser`s) decision for unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann telegram were, IMO, the main points greetings, Urs

hi, Ken, I agree, both ways to direct fire seem to be possible for the IIWO BÜ is an acronym for Befehlsübermittlung, i.e. command & control telephone I`m sure you have seen pictures of soldiers wearing a "head set" phone to listen and to talk into the mouthpiece greetings, Urs

Hi, With respect to your "It was much the same during an attack by gunfire except the IIWO was the gunnery officer & he would be on the bridge directing the deck gun crew." I beg to differ. IMO the II WO would stand on the boat's deck near the gun - to have the same eye level as the gunner - to direct the firing directly (there war no BÜ between bridge and gun) gree
