And that is why I posted the question here! Good information. While I have a ton of information and resources on US sub operations during WW2, I have no idea where to find such info for German U-boats. I guess I’ll keep searching to see if I can figure out what Herring’s target was.

Just got a copy of Theodore Roscoe’s “United States Submarine Operations In World War II” today, and while skimming through it, noticed that he states that USS Herring probably sunk a German U-boat while attached to SubRon 50 out of Scotland in 1943. Upon looking at Herring’s patrol report for her 3rd patrol, I found where she claimed an attack on a surfaced U-boat shortly after midnight on 21 M

I realize this was originally posted in 2019, but I was able to find through the US Navy muster rolls that were scanned by Ancestry.com that Jack Raymond Willis as assigned to Rasher in 1962 as a navigator at the ranks of LT. He was soon promoted to LCDR and made XO by 1963. They haven’t uploaded any more muster rolls past 1963, so I can’t tell you if he ever made CO. His obituary says he retir
