I am hoping someone can help me obtain a picture of Hermann Hesse, as I am preparing a brief article about him. His picture is available on the main site and I have tried contacting two of the admin staff using the address provided on the contact page. Sadly, I have not been able to get in touch with either using that method, and I was hoping someone could point me to another method. Of course

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can provide more details on Hermann Hesse. I have one source listing him as an Oblt.z.See in April 1940 when serving aboard the Karlsruhe, and not a Kaplt. Likewise, can someone confirm his DoB (I have a source saying 10.3.09, not 10.3.10) and place of birth? Also, can someone point me towards who I should contact about obtaining possibly a copy of the pict

Thanks to all who answered so quickly. I know it was an odd question. John, is there anything I can follow up as to which units in the PDC area employed such vessels or is that like asking which Flotilla employed boats? I realise this is a 'above-and-beyond' type question, so any help is genuinely appreciated. The boat in question was employed during the rescue of a Bf 110 crew that

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could ID the type of vessel in the linked eBay auction. It was active in the Channel during the summer of 1940. Even better, is anyone able to ID the boat, or know of a forum more appropriate to this question? Alternatively, can anyone let me know what surface units were stationed in the Pas de Calais area during this period. Many thanks in advance for any

Thank you both for your pointers, however my problem is that the picture clearly illustrates a boat underway with an early type conning tower and there is no deck gun. None of the boats that are known to have used this heraldic device were of a Type VII/A design, as far as I am aware and all pictures of the emblem I can see in the various reference materials I have, show it sitting in line with (

Hi all, Can anyone shed any light on which boat (or boats) used the snorting bull emblem, with the bull facing aft? I have a picture showing what appears to be a Typ VII/A boat, based on its conning tower, that I can't ID sporting the emblem. Any help appreciated in figuring out any information on possible boats. TIA Adam

Is the KTB for U47's 6th war cruise available? I am after details concerning three Luftwaffe personnel that were recovered from a downed Do18 on or around the 4th of June 1940. Any details about location, date, time or even if there was a message alerting the crew to the mishap would be appreciated.

Hi all, I was wondering if someone could share with me the Rangliste for graduating officer intake in 1938. I am after the total number of intake and the number transferred to the Luftwaffe. I have the statistics for the crews of the other prewar years, just not 1938. I have records of candidates 169 - 220 for this class, but need to flesh out the remaining candidates. Any help would be gr

Hi Rainer, Thank you for the response and sorry for my delayed response. The aircraft involved was an He111 and it did in fact drop bombs. Reported time was 1113 and if a friendly fire incident that explains why it didn't make the official list for claims. Thank you Adam

Hi guys, I realise this is not U-boat related, but I don't know a good forum on which to post this. Does anyone know of an attack (potential loss) of a submarine on 17.9.1941 in 5216/27 Ost (Lw grid system - but to my reckoning puts the attack north of Nordcap and within range of aircraft flying out of Banak). It appears to be a K class boat based on the German report. Any help app

I should add that Hesse's aircraft was Bf109F-4/Trop W.Nr. 10163, Weisse 6+ Again, no details as to loss.

Thank you very much for the information! Hesse was a member of 7./J.G.53 and had just recently claimed his first victory. The Ju88 crew belonged to 3./K.G.54 and the machine was Ju88 W.Nr. 140216 and its verbandkennzeichen was B3+TL. Interestingly the loss reports do not state where or why the crew was lost (in fact the reports that I have seen state that Müller was 'tot' and the oth

According to British sources, on or about 16 June 1942 a U-boat rescued the crew of a Ju88 bomber and that of a Do24. Presumably the latter was an air-sea rescue aircraft that had found the former, but then run in to trouble itself. The two crews - totalling ten men - were rescued by an unidentified U-boat. According to the same source, the U-boat had sunk a cruiser using three torpedoes on or ab

Sorry if this has been asked before or is answered somewhere else, but can anyone provide me with (or direct me to an online source) for the disposition of boats on the eve of war. I am after the number of and which boats were a) in the Baltic b) in the North Sea c) in the Atlantic With the latter two, if it is known whether they were transiting or assigned that region. I have seen the B

Hi all, I know he was not a U-boat man, but does anyone have access to crew lists for the Kriegsmarine intakes for 1935(ish)? I've looked on and can't find him, but I want to know if Gaul was part of the 1935 intake (DoB 13.11.14) and if so, how many men were part of that years crew. I know Gaul served on the Leopard as part of his training, but if there is anything further on this

Hi all, A long shot, but perhaps someone can help. According to the logbook of a German pilot, he rescued five British survivors in the Atlantic, one of whom was apparently a general. Does anyone have any hints as to who these men were or how they came to be stranded? thanks in advance Adam

Hi, According to the bio page on this site Scholtz underwent a mere four months training before being given command of U-108. Presumably this was his normal u-boat training course and final instruction phase at Bremen when the boat was in the last stages of readiness. However, how unusual was this process in terms of not providing a novice Kaleun with at least a learning experiene as a W.O abo

Thanks John, I hadn't thought of the Library. I will try with them. Yes I did mean that book - I haven't as yet seen it as I have it on order with the bookdepository. I am looking forward to it.

29. U-108
Hi all, I am chasing photographs of U-108 - particularly from its first cruise. If anyone has any they would be willing to share I would appreciate a private message. Also I am aware of the book covering this boat Thanks in advance
