It seems that the incidence of recovered boats has increased over the last several years. I have checked the Discovered boats section in the U-Boats folder, but don't see a way to determine, for instance, were there more boats recovered in the last 5 years, than were recovered in the prior 5 or 10 years. Would anyone have information on that. Regards, Gerard

From his profile I see that Korvettenkapitan Kentrat had successes from 1941 - 1944, which seems to me to be one of the longest stretches from the first sinking to the last sinking for a u-boat commander. Did any other commander have similar success in longevity? Regards, Gerard

I was surprised to see that over 33,000 tons of allied shipping was sunk on this date in 1945. Without checking specifically, I would guess that this was one of the more successful days in a very long time, accomplished against near impossible odds. Gerard

Sure, you just have to let it sit for a minute and it will look as it should. I just like to soften the edges of the gin with a vigorous shaking. Gerard

Dear Herr Kummrow, thank you for being polite, but there is no denying the difference in taste and body between a very light beer such as Coors versus a fine German beer. In my opinion. Happily, you are more likely to find Becks, Bittburger, Warsteiner, Spaten, Paulaner and other "imports" in the States than you are to find Coors, Budweiser or Miller at home. And there is a good reason

Dear Herr Kummrow, your note brings to mind the many photos of the returning crews where they hoist a round of Beck's. As I enjoy a Beck's in the States from time to time, I feel a bit of camaraderie with them. Oddly enough, it does not seem that Beck's remains very popular in Deutschland? I say this because I visited Munchen just before this past Christmas and while I sampled

As they say, the Best Medicine! I am sure pets help too, but not being home for most of every day, I would not be able to care for them properly. I do keep a well trained bottle of Tangueray in a cage for that soothing extra, extra dry Martini. Regards, Gerry

Any idea of the background location in the final photo showing the tonnage pennants? And the building in the background? Thanks, Gerard

While viewing some of the details on Ships hit today, I studied the successes of Cmdr. Ludden and saw that he managed his excellent record during the late part of 1943 and during 1944. These were difficult times to sink ships, nonetheless return home safely, so his record must be one of the best for that late in the war. Gerard

He was FregKpt. while he commanded U-173. He was promoted to K. zur See in 1943. Since he had no successes during only 1 command, does anyone know what merited the promotion to a rank most submariners did not reaxch? Gerard

Perhaps I should have done some research on this forum before asking my second question. It appears that while the book is valuable in the way it evokes the uboat war and service, its use as a historical reference is not recommended. Gerard

In Cmdr. Werners' "Iron Coffins", his early Commander Ottokar Paulssen is reported as giving the order "Both Three Times Full Ahead" when escaping from destroyer escorts. How is this different from a simple "Both Full Ahead"? Cmdr. Werner also reports firing a fan of torpedoes resulting in 3 torpedo explosions and smoke clouds on his patrol in grid square BF1

A round of applause for Gummi on the new Commander compilation listed by the year of decease. I am struck but not surprised at how many of these men lived into their 80's and 90's. I am not surprised because they had to be special, tough and resourceful men to do the service that they did. Gerard

Thank you, Rainer. A small additional point, but shouldn't have Cmdr. Kettner been credited with Damage and not Sinking, as his profile indicates? Perhaps leaving it in obvious sinking condition applies here? Regards, Gerard

One of today's featured Commanders, Paul-Hugo Kettner, is credited with sinking the Anneberg but which was actually sunk by depth charges from HMCS Battleford. How does one deploy depth charges under a non-moving ship, assuming that no one was on board to pilot her over the depth charges? Regards, Gerard

Bert, your inquiry should be shown separately from the thread on HMS Turbulent. I don't know how current the information is on the following site but you can find information at:
