Hi Mark U-37 landed Abwehr agent Ernst Weber-Drohl in Killala Bay on the 9-10 February 1940.Weber-Drohl's first attempt in a dinghy to get ashore failed. He was a heavy build man and carrying several suitcases. His second attempt was made by transferring to a wooden dingy and was helped by LtzS.Hans-Günter Kuhlmann who carried his luggage ashore and then helped Weber-Drohl ashore. Kuhl

Hi Ken I agree entirely what you have described the awful conditions that the crew of a U-boat had to live with and endure long patrols at sea. The movie "Das Boot" does give some idea what it was like onboard the U-boot. I would recommend COYS1882 to Read the book "The U-Boat Century German Submarine Warfare 1906-2006 by Jak Mallmann Showell. See Chapter 14 "The Men&qu

Hi Ken Very sad news. Horst was a very good friend. I had met him on many occasions on my visits to Altenbruch. I have had the good fortune to have stayed in the Deutsches U-Boat Museum where I made friends with other members of the FTU. Horst introduced me to Volkmar König (U-99) IN 2003. Aged 90 Horst worked tirelessly in his office in the Archive. I have happy memories and lots of phot

Craig McLean who was a contributor on this Forum passed away on the 20 September 2013 after a short illness. His interests were U-Boats and their history. Craig was a long standing member of the German U-Boat Museum, www.dubm.de and that is how we became great friends over the years. He will be sadly missed by all his U-Boat friends. I wish to extend my sympathy to his family in the USA. May he

Hi LIO I wish to amend a previous posting of mine. Its over 3 years ago since I last did research into the evacuation from Pillau. I am certain that you were correct in stating that Walter Kaeding was temporary commander of U-56 during the evacuation of Pillau on the 28 January 1945. I am hoping to visit the Deutsches U-Boot-Archiv again and to find out why Kaeding was made temporary comm

HI PAT This is a great photo of U-2518. I will advise the webmaster from Sealink-Holyhead that the U-boat in the photo is not U-2511. U-2518 was taken over by the French Navy after the end of World War 2. This U-boat arrived in Dun Laoghaire on the 7th.February 1946 and spent 3 days in the harbour. It then made its way to France arriving there on the 14th.February 1946 when it became the Fr
