Weren't the bells just ceremonial for the commissioning? I don't think they were attached at all underway. I have seen only one - in Finland.

This photo was posed in Grande-Ligne POW camp, 1944. Werner Lott (U-35) is seated, center. I cannot immediately identify any other individuals, and would appreciate inight and opinions - especially about the naval officers. Thanks in advance! +++++

Would mention of the early incidents of U-Boat chivalry be appropriate for your effort? My personal favorite - I am biased of course - is the Diamantis incident (www.U-35.com/Diamantis) and its consequences. Lott was certainly not anticipating anything like the events that unfolded, but he was forced into an extremely difficult decision by the recklessness of the Greek sailors. The internation

Joe, Volksbund finally replied to my inquiry and would like to consider additional details about the possible connection between Hinsching and Jentschin. Would you please provide the source of your information regarding the claim that the body washed ashore on 19 May 1942? Is any authoritative information available? Scans of documents would be particularly valuable. Thanks, Hans

I am attempting to track down a family member, and have contacted Volksbund. I don't think it is worthwhile to contact the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt), but Volksbund may want to do so. Stay tuned...

Excellent detective work, Hubertus! This is probably well worth some follow-up action. I suspect that it is a match. Happy New Year, Hans

If the 1919-born Heinemann is the correct person, please relay the fact that Heinemann's name is inscribed on the U-678 tablet at the U-Boat memorial near Kiel. You might suggest to your friend that she contact the Deutsche Dienstelle (WASt) in Berlin - - to order the full copy of his military records, available to direct relatives. This will take many months to complete, but it is wort

Thanks very much for sharing this. I am concerned about the sightings of a swastika, though. U-Boats in wartime did not display a number, and any swastika would be nearly impossible to see from a distance. Best regards, Hans

The resources here at uboat.net don't point to any close match to your attack. There are several sunk U-Boats near Algeria, even near Bone (now Annaba). But the timing and circumstances don't seem to permit a match yet. It is quite possible, therefore, that the U-Boat survived and that its logbook (KTB ) might reflect the attack. (There are many examples of claimed kills in which th

Didn't a number of the sinkexes include target practice phases prior to final sinking?

My guess: post-war target practice on one of the captured U-Boats as part of a SINKEX.

I would like to try to help. Is it possible to send scans? I have seen a couple images of the U-39 crew rescue.
