- second thoughts.... Your description resembles the drawing of the drawing in Georg Högel's "Embleme Wappen Malings deutscher U-boote 1939-1945" precisely. However this excellent book has many "quite close, but not quite" drawings or descriptions. If you go to the interrogation report of survivors from U-357 at and look for "badge", you will find a sl

Hi all Since no press release in English yet exists, I'll try to do a translation. This is an amateur's translation, so I take no responsibility for errors. I suppose there will be an official English version in near future. Here we go: U-864 is going to be raised "The government has today decided that the wreck of U-864 is going to be raised, and that the polluted sea

Ooops, I posted an unfinished post - I checked the link, and then had a problem when I returned. Please dsregard the post above, - this is the right one. Hi all Here's a link to a page with interviews of survivors (in German) and resquers (in Norwegian) of U 1060, which was attacked by planes, then grounded near Brønnøysund, Norway. Hello I suppose the rules that apply today aren't too much changed from the time of the VIIC's: A top lantern should give white non-blinking light and should be visible 112.5 degrees to each side from straigt forward to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam. A stern lantern should give white non-blinking light and should be visible 67.5 degres to each side from straight astern. The port

Paul, I can scan a couple of pages and send you tomorrow, from Eberhard Rössler's "The U-boat, if you don't already have this book. However, in the meantime try to google with a slightly different spelling: "Hohentwiel radar" Cheers Vidar

Hi Note that Mammoet states: "the possible salvage" The Norwegian Coastal Administration - NCA's advice to the Norwegian Government is to cover (encase) the wreck. If the Government on the other hand should decide to raise the wreck, NCA's recommendation is to go for Mammoet's alternative among other that has been considered. Here is a link to NCA's English page

Oh by the way. Your question about U-864 caught my attention. You see I am a bit on the alert about U-864, - it's almost resting in my backyard. I'm living about 40 km south of the wreck, and very much look forward for a decicison about the matter. Plan A is to cover the wreck with sand and hope for that the mercury won't leak. However, the authorties have asked for a reconsidera

Hi Some clarification seems to be needed here: I haven't seen any references to HMS Ultimatum and U-864. However, if you check a bit around on the pages on Uboat.net you will find the following: About HMS Ultimatum (and U-431 and U-73): U 431: Previously recorded fate (Last revised by FDS/NHB during November 1987). Sunk 30 Oct, 1943 in the Mediterranean southeast of Toulon, F

When reading different reports and books, I very often see references to kidney disorders among U-boat men. For example one can read in the British interrogation report (on www.uboatarchive.net) of survivors from U-70, about Kapitänleutnant Joachim Matz: "His period of ill-health, due to the kidney trouble so prevalent among U-boat officers...." What was the nature of this common

Hi Matt Another hint in the riddle: Reynard the Fox (Reinhard der Fuchs), see U-255's commander Reinhard Reche compared himself with this fabulous animal with the same name as himself, and used the fox in his emblem. Thee three later commanders of U-255 kept the same emblem. The second commander was Erich Harms who had been 1WO under Reche. Harms later commissioned U-3023, and used

Hi I don't know where Timm was imprisoned, but as an example I can list the PoW story of another U-boat captain, - Hans Falke of U 992. He probably went another path of PoW camps than Timm, since they had very different backgrounds. Timm was interned in Singapore and wasn't sent to England until July 1946. U-992 was brought to Lisahally in Northern Ireland from Norway right after

Hi Please clarify your question Are you asking for pictures of the commanders of U-101?, like Friedrich Bothe and Ernst von Witzendorff who are missing from this website. I'm asking because I dream of making a complete gallery of all the U-boat (and submarine) commanders that participated in WW2. Rgds Vidar

Hi Just want to remind you that the Aphrodite balloon needed a lift to stay floating. They had to be lighter than the ambient air. They could therefore not be filled with air from the air system. The Aphrodite balloon were filled with hydrogen stored in bottles on the tower. Hydrogen is as you sure know a flamable gas, but unless it's mixed with oxygen it's not explosive. If a bottle

Hi Both the attempted Biber action against the "Archangelsk" and U 864's mercury mission have been referred to as "Operation Caesar". Regarding the Biber mission, there is one good word covering it: Confusion. Regarding the Biber mission, Many sources say that the three U-boats involved were U 295/Wieboldt, U 716/Dunkelberg and U 739/Mangold. I have also seen one
