I would direct this query possibly to Hubertus (Herb)... Were either Oberleutnant zur See Hermann Bruder (U 1058) OR Oberleutnant zur See Klaus Hilgendorf (U 1009) recipients of the German Cross?

John, Both an interesting query and reply - in the past I have relied on the actual (copy/facsimile) of the KTB as a primary source of "patrol number"......

John, Ritschel (Volume 12) classes it as her 5th Patrol. Also here (which is a reflection of the Ritschel reference): War Diary Of Captain U-Boats - Italy for the period in question, also indicates a war patrol. 13 February 1942 entry: "U652 (Fraatz) reported he had commenced return voyage. All torpedoes expended apart from one stern acoustic torpedo."

Dave, The Panama hats made their initial appearance on 5 May 1941 at the departure of U 69 from Lorient for it's 3rd patrol to the South Atlantic. They were also worn when returning to port, as the photo indicates. There is no other reference to the source of the "Panama Hats" in preceeding or succeeding chapters of the book. Possibly they were purchased in Lorient between M

This might help: An excerpt: Jupiter, Jupiter Inlet, Neptune, Florida A point of land situated at the Loxahatchee and Indian River junction; Jupiter Inlet was, for thousands of years, a meeting place for ancient Indian tribes. The strategic site did not go unnoticed by U.S. Army surveyors, who in 1849 recommended the Jupiter Inlet area as a suitable place for military defenses. In

John, The distance between 59.33N 25.36W and 58.39N 25.36W is 56.5010 nautical miles. This calculation assumes the earth is a perfect sphere with a radius of 3443.9 nautical miles. This is the link (Ken's not that smart - needed a little help): Per the KTB's for each boat - on 22 December 1943: U 103 sighted U 364 moving North at 0623 in grid square AL 1531; U 364 also

Paul, The possibles were U-161, U-163 and U-164 with U-161 being the likely candidate. I could just barely make out the Wappen on the conning tower as possibly a Viking ship in conjunction with the vent signature. Cheers..
