134. Re: U-41
Nobby, I guess also that since he made the error of thinking that the "Cresswell" was a "Q Ship" and found that he had sunk a fishing trawler, he decided to take aboard the survivors - maybe at that point he decided to quickly find a way of transferring the survivors to an in-port bound trawler due to his space limitations. The quick way out was the overhauling of the &

135. Re: U-41
Nobby, My thoughts on this.... Since the U 41 had just left for patrol on 7 November 1939 and the event in question happened on the 12th - The CO of U 41 had approximately 22 days left on his patrol and the extra 7(survivors) man complement added to the 48-56 man crew of U 41 was not a welcomed possibility for the next 20+ days. Victims of U-Boat attacks were still treated differently in

136. Re: U596
Maciek, U 596 was directed to get a schnorkel installation on 23 May 1944 - it was fitted at Pola Werft (Croatia) between 23 May and 28 June 1944. Schnorkel training for this boat took place between 6-8 July 1944. First operational use of the schnorkel was on 30 July 1944. U 264 - Schnorkel testing between 16-28 January 1944 - initial test was cancelled due to faulty supply air valve head o

John, The abbreviated entry for U 255 in Ritschel Vol. 6 follows: 22 April 1945 from St. Nazaire (11th Patrol) On the way to Les Sables - quiet weather, almost smooth sea. 23 April 1945 BF 6825 Boat is not handling well in the swell (mechanical problems later found with with the Stb. rudder). 24 April 1945 BF 6821 Against Les Sables d'Olonne 2 drops of 5 TMB* (10 mines

Laurie, A legend my friend. Villa Winter was built after 1950 and has no bearing on visiting U-Boats. True, a strange place to build a large home - that is the only mystery regarding Villa Winter at Cofete. The background history on Herr Gustav Winter has also been established. The water depth around the so-called caves would never permit access a U-Boat. Rip tides and surf conditions aroun

146. Re: U295
John, HMS Pytchley (L.92) accomplished the tow. The weather was too rough for her destruction by torpedo from HMS Tantivy (P.319) as initially planned, so the Polish destroyer sunk her with gunfire instead. Reference: The Grey Wolves Of Eriboll by David Hird - Page 74

John, The "incident" occurred on 31.12.42 at 0630 in BD7815. A Mech-Maat suffered an advanced scrotal hernia and a transfer request to BdU (eventually via U 406) was requested. The transfer to U 406 took place 03.1.43 in CD 3255 at 1804 As an interesting side note: Included in the transfer of the sailor to U 406, was his luggage and about 100 messages (letters), packed in a
