According to Blair, there was a fuel transfer from U509 to U103 and U108. U103 and U108 (together with U510) were intended to patrol the sea near Freetown, searching SL convoys. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, to calculate distance you can use it this tool: When I used your data, I got: 222.2 km = 120 nm. The economical speed for VIIC U-Boat was 6~7 knots, that means, that dist distance would be covered in about 20 hours. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, On the photos of the U-505 conning tower there is visible Wanze Runddipol, as you have noticed. She was not equipped with Hohentwiel radar (FuMO 61), but FuMO 30 radar set only. See this page: Why both? "Wanze" was passive device - it was designed to detect enemy radar emissions. FuMO 30 was active device - pure radar. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, although "Iron Coffins" is great book, it has a lot of inaccuracies. You can see this post: You should not take this book as historical document. -- Regards Maciek

The supplying of U 106 took place during 4th patrol of U 481, while U 108 was supplied during 5th patrol. On the uboatarchive.net webpage is published KTB from this latter one. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, Officer's hatch was situated in the officer's room - a compartment which was located just forward of the control room. Here you can download the type XIV U-Boat drawing: The hatch you are asking for is clearly visible there. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, to complete your statement, during last phase of charging, the cell temperature should not exceed 45 deg C. And after reaching cell voltage of value 2,4 V starts generating hydrogen and oxygen. As you said, these factors require great attention during last phase of charging. Also there are some external factors, which influence the charging process - for example you can read about

Well, of course - introducing Junkers compressor (since U98) had aim to increase charging rate. First - recharging air bottles with compressed air by means of diesel driven compressor was a little bit effective than by means of electric compressor (in first case you had following "energy transformation" - chemical energy of fuel->mechanical energy->compressed air, in second -

Hi, the standard charging procedure was charging with constant current of value 1650 A, till the cell voltage achieve 2,4 V. Then the current was gradually reduced (in about hour) to 415 A (to maintain constant voltage). Then charging was completed. I know, that starting from 2,2 V per cell to the end of charing took about 3,5 h. By extrapolating this data down to maximum discharge voltage (~

Hi, this cover was not attached to the strainer by means of any type of hinge. When U 505 was abandoned, she was on the surface, which means, that this opened strainer was max 3 meters below water surface. I can not estimate how tough would be to stop such water rush. U 505 during the capture had flooded aft compartments and was trimmed aft, so both battery rooms (forward of control ro

Hi, in fact the boarding party put back the cover of the sea strainer, which was removed by control room crew before abandoning the vessel. This sea strainer is located near the main bilge pump, so it is probably in the suction line of the main bilge pump. This line could be connected by means of manifold valves with sea water intake hull valve. The other strainers are in the suct

Hi, I have not found any records, that U861 and U862 were refueled during their cruise to the East. I think, we can assume, that they were able to reach Japan. -- Regards Maciek

Hi, I was in hurry too much, when I was writing about U 178 war patrols. During her second patrol she was refueled from MV Charlotte Schliemann: "U 178, 198, 181, 196, 197 and 177 have increased their supplies to about 420 - 440 cubic meters from the tanker "Schliemann", and taken the appropriate provisions on board." The date is unclear for me - she was or

Hi, first question - I think it could be possible - if you look on the route of second and third war patrol of U 178, you will see, total length of its route was sufficient to reach Japan (from France). second question - it seems, that last surface supply vessel - Python - was sunk (by HMS Dorsetshire) on 1st December 1941. In the BdU KTB, on this date there is an entry: "In

Hi Mike, The plating is gradually reduced throughout the tapered sections fore and aft to 16 mm (from 18 mm in midship). >> Any idea where the platinum would come from? I have not found the platinium in U864 cargo manifest, but maybe (along with mercury) it has been transfered to Japan as a cargo? It could be used as a alloying addition while manufacturing jet engines. -- Re

Hi Mike, inside the pressure hull are only three fuel tanks (two gravity tanks and one collecting tank) - part of fuel oil delivery system. Their total capacity is about 2000 l, so I think, they can not be taken into account. -- Regards Maciek
